Tribute to the Pillars of Sevamandir

Periamma’s successors, inspired by her selfless service, have been instrumental in the continued growth and development of Sevamandir. We gratefully pay our tribute to the following visionary women whose lives and leadership shaped Sevamandir’s journey

Ms. Mary Chakko Amma ("Chinnamma")

Affectionately known as Chinnamma, Ms. Mary Chakko served Sevamandir with distinction — first as a Principal, and later as Correspondent and Managing Trustee. Her years of exemplary service left an indelible mark on the institution and continue to inspire us.

Ms. Saraswathy ("Martha Akka" / "Warden Akka")

A true legend of Sevamandir, Ms. Saraswathy began her journey as a teacher trainee, later served as a teacher for 10 years, and ultimately dedicated 48 years as a Warden — rendering a total of 60 years of service.

Beyond the classroom, she cared for:

  • Sevamandir’s agricultural fields, cultivating cotton and vegetables,

  • A dairy herd, providing fresh milk,

  • A bakery, ensuring nutritious meals,

  • And diligently protecting Sevamandir’s land from encroachment.

Her commitment lasted until her final breath on 01.10.2011. She remains an unforgettable presence in our hearts.

Ms. Prabhavathy Joseph ("Periya Akka")

Our beloved Periya Akka was entrusted by Ms. Chakko to carry the torch of leadership. She joined Sevamandir in 1965 as the Principal of the Teacher Training Institute, a role she served in with grace until her retirement.

Her collaborative spirit uplifted both staff and students, building a nurturing Sevamandir family. She represented Sevamandir across the globe, receiving full project scholarships and even meeting John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States.

Her enthusiasm for ‘LOVE AND SERVE’ radiated throughout the campus. She served as the Managing Trustee and Correspondent until her passing on 17.11.2019.

Ms. Leelavathy Isaac ("H.M. Akka / Chinna Akka")

Moulded under the guidance of Chinnamma and Periya Akka, Ms. Leelavathy Isaac joined Sevamandir in June 1967 as Headmistress, a role she fulfilled with dedication until her retirement in 2001.

After retirement, she chose to stay at Sevamandir and, following Periya Akka’s passing, has served as the Managing Trustee and Correspondent from 17.11.2019 till date.

Her unwavering commitment and tireless efforts have made her a true pillar of strength and a cherished leader.

We are also grateful to many staff members who continue to serve even after retirement. Their ongoing contributions are invaluable to the continued success of Sevamandir.

At Sevamandir, staff and students unite as one family, participating together in all activities with shared joy and purpose. We look forward to many more milestones, honoring the legacy of our forebears and building on their vision.
