SEVAMANDIR – PORTONOVO A UNIQUE INSTITUTE FOR THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN
Welcome to SEVAMANDIR, Parangipettai, a unique institute for the empowerment of girls students following the footsteps of our founder, ANNIE MARIE PETERSEN.
As Correspondent and Managing Trustee, I am honoured to lead this historical institute that values character formation, academic achievement and value education and empowerment of women. Our mission here is to make all our students good human beings and honest citizens following the methods of our founder and her friend and guide, Gandhiji, the father of our nation.

THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE DANISH MISSIONARY
Ms. Annie Marie Peterson had in her mind ‘National Christian Girls School’ in 1921 on its inauguration. On seeing the service of this institution, Gandhiji changed its name as “SEVAMANDIR’ which signifies ‘TEMPLE OF SERVICE’
In 1949, Sevamandir was recognized as JUNIOR BASIC TRAINING SCHOOL’. In 1956, the junior basic training school was converted into a SENIOR BASIC TRAINING SCHOOL.
Founding of Sevamandir
Anne Marie Petersen had a vision to start a school for girl children. On Sep 17, 1921, when Gandhi was his way to his tour in South India and travelling towards Cuddalore from Madras, she invited him to lay the foundation stone for Seva mandir (Temple of Service) and a National Christian Girls School at Porto Novo, Parangipettai.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The primary aim of our trust is to foster educational empowerment of girl children and promote the integral development of the girls, enabling them to become intellectually competent, morally sound, spiritually strong, physically fit and socially alert, capable of critical judgment and ready to face the challenges of life.
Thus, it endeavors to form the girls into good and honest citizens, instilling in them love for humanity and bring out those qualities which are best and noblest in them. Special attention is given to ensure Indian national identity with vernacular learning
A true education that gives self-identity, learn and develop skills to live on their own. A vernacular education designed at creating peoplehood and humanity with practical skills and work for life.

There are times in the histories of institutions, when the glory is celebrated, when milestones are revised and past is commemorated as an inspiration for a better future. On 18 , October 2022, completed its long and arduous journey of Hundred Years. There were times of numerous triumphs and tribulations.
